People that don’t live on the coast are getting more for their money. Arizona seems to be the only state where $100 will get you $100. Some states are more and some are less valued.
In Colorado, the power of $100 is actually lower and valued at $98.00 which is still better than some coastal states like California.
A GoBankingRates analysis found that the purchasing power of $100 is highest in Mississippi, Arkansas, and Alabama. However, $100 won’t get you much in Hawaii or California. In fact, $100 is worth 26% less in California than in Arkansas.
There are 18 states, (California, Hawaii, Washington, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, New Hampshire, Oregon, Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island, Colorado, Florida, Virginia, Alaska, Illinois, Vermont and Maine), where the purchasing power of $100 is lower than its actual value, and is lowest in California, where it’s estimated to be worth just $88.
The analysis examined median household incomes, cost-of-living expenses, and home values from Zillow to see the impact of inflation by state. Purchasing power tends to dip as you head toward either coast.
