The term comes from gentoo penguins in Antarctica, who were seen giving each other rocks as part of their courtship rituals. Those penguins used the rocks to symbolize their wish to build a nest together.

Nowadays, pebbling means sending small tokens of love or affection to friends or loved ones that you think will make them smile. This often takes the form of memes, GIFs, or fun social media clips that you share to brighten someone’s day.
