Dictionary.com announces ‘6-7’ as 2025 Word of the Year

Oct 29, 2025, 6:10 PM | Updated: Oct 30, 2025, 12:58 pm

“6-7” is the 2025 Word of the Year. Dictionary.com announced the “6-7” term is a result of classic brainrot slang, which is “purposefully nonsensical and all about being in on the absurdity.”

The annual pick serves as a “linguistic time capsule, reflecting social trends and global events that defined the year,” according to Dictionary.com.

A Dictionary.com analysis, “6-7” appeared in digital media six times more frequently in October alone than it did throughout all of 2024.

The “6-7” phenomenon emerged from a combination of events in early 2025 with a meme that came from a song. The song is the 2024 drill rap song “Doot Doot (6 7)” by artist Skrilla, which features the repeating lyric “six-seven”.

Then, the viral social media edits paired the song with videos of NBA player LaMelo Ball, who happens to be 6 feet 7 inches tall.

Then, a YouTube video showed a young boy, who became known as the “6-7 Kid,” yelling the phrase at a basketball game while performing a distinctive hand gesture. You gotta motion your hands up and down when saying, “Six sevvvveeeeeeennnnn.”

My daughters have been saying 6-7 for most of the year. Every answer to a question is “6-7.”

Here is another explanation of “6-7” and what the motion means.
