Department of Transportation asks public to ‘dress with respect’ for flights

It’s Thanksgiving week! FAA is expecting 56,000 flights and 18 million travelers this holiday week.

If you are flying, try not to wear your pajamas and comb your hair. It shows consideration for others as well as yourself.

The Department of  Transportation is asking the public to usher  in the “Golden Age of Travel” — and it apparently means dressing up before you head to the airport.

Amazon has a whole section of clothes just to be comfortable when you travel. We take pillows with us. Is that all supposed to just come to a stop? Yes, the DOT hopes that American travelers can focus more on being helpful, minding your manners and dressing better.

In a press release issued Wednesday, the DOT announced that Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy hopes that this new initiative will reduce rude behavior and in-flight disturbances caused by passengers. As part of Duffy’s campaign, the DOT suggested that passengers should be “dressing with respect,” but it did not elaborate on exactly what that means.

“People dress up like they’re going to bed when they fly,” Duffy said, while listing his issues with certain passenger behaviors.

What does, “dressing with respect” mean? Elaine Swann, the author of, Elaine’s Book of Etiquette, said she thinks there’s “some truth” to Duffy’s remarks, and believes that passengers should level up their attire when preparing to board a flight. “Yes, some people do look like they’re going to bed. And in my opinion, that’s unacceptable,” Swann said.

So, maybe the days of looking like you just rolled out of a hamper are over with. There is something to be said about how your dress is how you act and are perceived. However, will dressing nicer really help efforts to keep people from being rude?
