Sloth’s aren’t known for their speed, but they are known for stealing hearts. The Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance is celebrating the birth of the latest sloth pup and have named it after a local landmark. The baby Linne’s two toed sloth has been named Sloan, after Denver’s Sloan Lake.
The Denver Zoo had given voters three names to chose from;
- Harper – after illustrator Charley Harper
- Sloan – after Sloan’s Lake
- Isabel or Bel for short – name was inspired by the San Juan National Forest
The Denver Zoo said in their Facebook post
Named after Denver’s own Sloan’s Lake, her name reflects the serene beauty and calm grace of this beloved local landmark
The Denver Zoo’s website also says this about two toed sloths,
Sloths are so sedentary that algae grow on their long fur. The greenish color of the algae provides camouflage that helps sloths blend into the rainforest canopy. Their fur actually has groves in each strand that allow algae to grow and collect. They sleep 15-20 hours a day and often remain motionless even when awake. They feed at night when they are protected by darkness.
