World Suicide Prevention Day 9-10-26
Sep 10, 2026, 6:36 PM
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and Colorado has one of the highest suicide rates in the nation.
Nationally, nearly 49,000 people died by suicide in 2024 — that’s one person every 11 minutes. Right here in Colorado, we lost over 1,300 lives that same year, and our state’s suicide rate of 20.9 per 100,000 remains one of the highest in the nation.
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for young people ages 15–34.
These aren’t just numbers. That’s our neighbors, our kids, our people.
Parents — watch for big changes. Withdrawal from friends. Giving away belongings. Sudden mood swings or losing interest in things they loved. If something feels off, lean in and invite more support around your family. It’s okay to ask for help.
And here’s what I wish everyone knew: you can call or text 988 anytime — not just during a crisis. The 988 Lifeline is free, confidential, and 24/7.
Parents, you can call just to ask questions. Ask about the changes in your friend or children.
This year’s theme says it all: your reason is reason enough.
One more thing as fall arrives. Shorter days and less sunlight hit differently here in Colorado. Get outside in early morning sun. Have your vitamin D levels checked. Try a light therapy lamp that mimics summer sun. Small, intentional steps make a real difference.
You matter. You are not alone.
