This is the stuff that dreams are made from, a 29 year-old high school teacher is competing in the U.S. Open.
Colin Prater is a full-time job biology teacher and golf coach at Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He got a spot at Pinehurst by finishing second at a 36-hole qualifier in Bend, Oregon. Prater is one of only 73 qualifiers to emerge from 9,522 entrants.
Prater isn’t just your average golfer though. He is considered one of the top amateur players in Colorado and he’s never been to a U.S. Open let alone played in one. Prater was a former Division II first-team All-American at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs and four years ago won both the Colorado Golf Association’s Amateur and Match Play.
Prater played with Jordan Spieth on Wednesday and said he got to meet Rory McIllroy and get advice from him on playing Pinehurst.
