How many cups of coffee is safe to have per day

Jul 20, 2026, 6:02 PM | Updated: Jul 21, 2026, 10:06 am

The American Heart Association says  up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day is safe for most people and their hearts.

That is the  equivalent of four cups of coffee.

An AHA study notes that moderate coffee or tea use may have heart benefits.

The report also flagged energy drinks as a concern.

High-dose caffeine from energy drinks and shots has been linked to abnormal heart rhythms, especially in healthy adults under 30.

Even better, drinking 2–4 cups daily was linked to a lower risk of heart disease, heart failure, stroke, and Type 2 diabetes.

The catch? We’re talking plain caffeinated coffee — not the sugary, syrup-loaded drinks many of us love.

And pushing past four cups a day may actually increase the risk of heart failure.

Bottom line: your morning coffee habit is probably fine. Just maybe skip the third Red Bull.
