Tax season is here — don’t fall for these common scams

The IRS is now accepting tax returns for 2025, but a federal watchdog is warning Americans about phishing and smishing scams targeting personal information.

Scammers are sending robo-emails and texts claiming to be from the IRS or state tax offices, asking recipients to verify their identity by clicking a link and providing personal information. The FTC advises against clicking on such links and reminds taxpayers that the IRS does not reach out via text, email or social media for personal information.

Another scam involves fake government agency callers claiming owed back taxes and requesting personal information. Taxpayers are urged to hang up on such calls and report abusive tax schemes to the IRS.
