The unexpected winner from America’s new weight loss drugs are the airlines. Weight is one of the most important drivers of fuel efficiency.
CNBC says airlines are saving money on fuel because so many people are now on weight loss pills and receiving weight loss jabs. “Even a 10 percent drop in average passenger weight could mean up to 1.5 percent fuel savings for airlines, impacting the bottom line significantly.”
The network says even a 2 percent decline in average passenger weight brings a substantial earnings boost to major U.S. carriers.
Collectively, the four carriers are expected to burn about 16 billion gallons of fuel in 2026 at an average fuel price of $2.41 a gallon, according to Jefferies. That puts their combined fuel bill at nearly $39 billion, accounting for nearly 19 percent of total operating expenses. Passengers hope the airlines pass along the savings to them.
