The blooming Denver tree that smells like rotten fish

By Melissa Moore on April 10, 2024

Denver, CO – It’s Spring time in Denver and the flowers are starting to bloom and so are the fish smelling trees.  Trust me you’ve seen them and probably smelled them and not realized what you were smelling.  The fish smelling trees are called Callery Pear and their ‘scent’ is to attract pollinators – not humans.

The smelly trees are beautiful though with their white flower cluster blooms.  The non-native Asian tree was introduced sometime in the 1900s.  Three states; Ohio, Pennsylvania and South Carolina have banned the tree because of the smell and how invasive it is.
