That TV habit is shrinking your brain

Jul 21, 2026, 5:40 PM

Watching too much tv during midlife won’t rot your brain, but it will shrink important parts of it.

A brand-new study from the University of Southern California says yes — and the findings are wild.

Researchers followed about 1,700 adults and found that people who watched TV frequently during midlife showed smaller brain regions later in life, specifically areas tied to memory, decision-making, and visual processing.

They also showed more signs of damage in the brain’s white matter.  There were greater white matter hyperintensities, which are signs of cerebral small blood vessel disease and have been linked to cognitive decline and dementia.

The same group also had smaller frontal and occipital lobes. The frontal lobes play an important role in planning, decision-making, and other executive functions, while the occipital lobes are central to visual processing.

Here’s the twist: sitting itself wasn’t the problem.

People who spent long hours seated at mentally stimulating jobs — like reading, working, or problem-solving — actually showed healthier brain patterns.

It’s the passive nature of TV watching that seems to do the damage. Your brain basically checks out.

These differences remained even after the researchers accounted for physical activity, diabetes, body mass index, smoking, and alcohol use.

So the next time someone tells you to “just sit and relax” in front of the TV, maybe pick up a book instead. Your brain will thank you.
