Science confirms stolen fries taste better

We’ve all done it — swiped a fry off someone else’s plate and thought, why does this taste so much better?
Turns out, science agrees. A new study published in the journal Food Quality and Preference found that stolen French fries are rated 40% more enjoyable than your own.
Researchers tested 120 participants across four scenarios: eating their own fries, sharing from a fellow diner, or secretly snagging fries from someone else’s plate.
The riskier the theft, the better the fry tasted — even though the fries were identical every time.
The researchers put it beautifully: “The stolen fry emerges as an improbable exemplar of how human reward circuitry converts social risk into sensory poetry.”
So next time someone reaches for your plate — now you know why.
