Raising a kid now costs over $300,000

Apr 10, 2026, 7:40 AM

If you’ve felt like your bank account is weeping lately, you aren’t alone. A new report from Lending Tree just confirmed what every parent in Denver already knows: raising a child is, quite literally, getting more expensive by the minute.

According to their 2026 data, the total cost to raise a child to age 18 has officially crossed the $300,000 threshold, hitting $303,418. To put that in perspective, that’s a 27.8% increase from 2023. I’m not saying I need to go get a third job, but I’m definitely looking at my two daughters a little differently today. Maybe we skip college and they can just join the circus?

The researchers found that while we saw a 1.9% uptick from last year’s $297,674, it’s the early years that really sting. We’re doing the heavy lifting, navigating inflation, and trying to keep our sanity while our kids grow up faster than our savings accounts can keep up with.

For those of you wondering where the money goes, it’s not just the diapers and the endless supply of organic gold-colored goldfish crackers. Inflation is hitting everything from housing to the basic necessities of keeping a small human alive and thriving.

Look, we know the “joys of parenthood” are priceless, but these numbers are enough to make you double-check if those “buy one, get one” coupons are still valid.

So, Denver, take a deep breath. Whether you’re pinching pennies or just trying to navigate the grocery store without needing a personal loan, we’re in this together. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go look at my bank account and reconsider my retirement plan—which currently consists of “hope my future kids get rich and have a spare bedroom.”
