Nothern Colorado woman gives birth to a baby on side of I-25

Whoa! As a mom, I can tell you that the side of any highway is the last place I would want to give birth. People do not slow down for anything!
But babies don’t exactly check traffic—or the birth plan—before deciding it’s time. You like what I did there?
A Colorado family got quite the birth story Tuesday morning when their little one arrived in the back of a Thompson Valley EMS ambulance.
The crew was taking the expectant mom to a local hospital when her labor progressed quickly. The crew pulled over on I-25 near the Windsor exit to help deliver the baby.
At 7:54 a.m., that ambulance officially became a delivery room!
Thankfully, mom had a prepared team right there with her: senior paramedic Seth Knop, paramedic Zannie Lujan, EMT Brandy Heustis and paramedic specialist Will Ryan.
Thompson Valley EMS said the crew had anticipated that the baby might arrive before they reached the hospital.
After the delivery, the crew secured mom and baby and continued to the hospital. Dad was transported there, too.
Thompson Valley EMS said both mom and baby were healthy following the delivery.
Battalion chief Chris Cruz said crews are trained and equipped for unexpected births. That’s reassuring, because there’s only so much planning you can do when a baby is ready to make their debut.
A big Colorado thank-you to this crew for helping a family through an unforgettable morning.
