Sniffing Dark Chocolate Might Help Your Workout, Because Apparently This Is Where Fitness Is Now

Sep 30, 2026, 9:34 AM

If your gym bag already smells like old socks, questionable protein powder and regret, good news: There may be room for one more scent.

A new study suggests that the aroma of dark chocolate could improve workout performance, with men who sniffed dark chocolate completing 18 more leg-extension reps than men in a water-control group.

Yes, you read that correctly. Not eating chocolate. Not blending it into a protein shake. Just smelling it.

Science has officially reached the “take a whiff before leg day” phase.

The dark chocolate sniff test

In the study, participants were exposed to different aromas before exercising, including dark chocolate, milk chocolate and water as a control. Researchers found that men exposed to the smell of dark chocolate performed better during a leg-extension exercise compared with the water group.

They also reported feeling less hungry and more full before exercising.

That matters because appetite, perceived fullness and exercise performance can all be connected. If someone feels distracted by hunger before a workout, they may not perform as well. The scent of dark chocolate may have created enough of a “food cue” to affect how participants felt going into exercise — without actually eating anything.

Basically, the nose told the brain, “We’ve had dessert,” and the legs apparently said, “Fine, we’ll do more reps.”

Milk chocolate smelled better but did less

Here’s the twist: Milk chocolate was rated as more pleasant than dark chocolate or water.

No shock there. Milk chocolate smells like childhood, candy bars and making poor but delicious choices at a gas station. Dark chocolate smells like a sophisticated adult who owns linen pants.

But despite being rated more pleasant, milk chocolate did not produce the same appetite-related changes as dark chocolate. Participants who smelled dark chocolate reported less hunger and greater fullness before exercising, while milk chocolate didn’t appear to have the same effect.

So, in this case, the better-smelling option was not the more useful one. Rude, but on brand for fitness.

What this might mean for workouts

The big takeaway is not that you should replace pre-workout with a 72% cacao bar taped under your nose. Please do not be that person at the gym. Or at least don’t make eye contact while doing it.

But the findings do add to a growing area of research around how smell can affect appetite, mood, motivation and performance. Aromas can trigger physical and psychological responses, especially when they are tied to foods people associate with energy, satisfaction or comfort.

Dark chocolate is also commonly linked with “healthier indulgence,” which may matter. The scent could reduce hunger or make someone feel more satisfied before training, potentially helping them push harder or last longer during certain exercises.

The leg-extension result is especially interesting because 18 additional reps is not exactly nothing. Anyone who has done leg extensions to failure knows those last few reps feel like your quads are filing a complaint with management.

Don’t overdo the chocolate hype

As fun as this is, it is still one study. It also looked at men, so we should be careful about assuming the same results apply to everyone. The exercise tested was specific, too: leg extensions. That does not automatically mean dark chocolate aroma will help you run a faster 5K, deadlift a Buick or survive a spin class taught by someone named Tiffani with a microphone.

More research is needed to figure out why dark chocolate aroma had this effect, whether it works for women, whether it helps with other types of exercise and whether the benefits hold up in real-world workouts.

Still, the idea is interesting — and very low-risk. Smelling dark chocolate before exercise is cheaper than most supplements and probably safer than whatever neon dust is in your pre-workout tub.

The bottom line

According to the study, sniffing dark chocolate before exercise may help reduce hunger, increase feelings of fullness and improve performance in at least one strength exercise. Men who smelled dark chocolate completed 18 more leg-extension reps than those in a water-control group.

Milk chocolate smelled better, because of course it did, but it did not produce the same appetite-related effects.

So, if you want to experiment, go ahead and smell some dark chocolate before your next workout. Worst case, nothing happens. Best case, your legs do a little extra work.

Middle case, you just eat the chocolate.

Honestly, still a win.
