MTV Video Music Awards winners

Sep 11, 2024, 8:34 PM | Updated: Sep 12, 2024, 11:33 am

MTV’s Video Music Awards may be four decades old, but it has aged like fine wine.

The awards show that debuted in 1984, only a few years after MTV’s inception in 1981, honors the best that music videos has to offer. The 40th event airs live at 6 p.m. MT on Wednesday, September 11, from New York’s UBS Arena.

This year’s event is hosted by first-time emcee Megan Thee Stallion. Scattered intermittently between the awards will be performances from 18 artists, including Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Eminem, all of whom have had particularly notable years with chart-topping album releases. The latter will open the show as the second-most nominated artist of all time and is expected to perform hits from his album released earlier in the year, “The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce).”

Taylor Swift leads the pack going into the night with 12 nominations, eight of which being for her “Fortnight” music video featuring Post Malone. Malone himself follows closely behind her with 11 nominations, 10 from “Fortnight” and the other from his country-leaning collaboration with Morgan Wallen, “I Had Some Help.” Tying for the third-most nominations this year are Eminem, Ariana Grande and Carpenter. The latter is a first-time nominee.

Swift is the owner of 23 Moon Person trophies, second only to Beyoncé, who has 30. Swift is in a spot to become the winningest artist in VMAs history.

Most major awards are dictated by voters who participated in the selection process on MTV’s website, although a panel of experts determines the winners of the technical categories. The most coveted award of the night, Video of the Year, could go home to any of the six artists nominated: Grande, Billie Eilish, Doja Cat, Eminem, SZA and Swift/Malone.

Another highlight of the night will feature Katy Perry, slated to receive the Video Vanguard Award, which is given to those who have made “outstanding contributions” to music videos and whose videos have a “profound impact” on popular culture. Perry will also take the stage as a performer.

Winners will be bolded as they are announced.
