Bebe the parakeet goes snorkeling in Bahamas with homemade submarine

If you think your weekend plans are impressive, I have some bad news: you’ve been officially out-adventured by a six-year-old bird.

Bebe, our favorite parakeet and bona fide adrenaline junkie, has officially traded the sky for the sea. With 15 skydiving jumps, a history of cross-state bike trips in Iowa, and more flight hours than most of us have in our frequent flyer accounts, Bebe was clearly getting bored of the usual routine.

So, what does a bird like Bebe do when he wants to spice up a trip to the Bahamas? He goes snorkeling, of course.

His human, Steven Lawyer—a guy who clearly has a very high tolerance for DIY projects and bird-related chaos—realized that if they were heading to the tropics, Bebe couldn’t just be left on the beach. “We like to snorkel and he likes doing whatever we are doing,” Lawyer said.

Enter the “Bebosphere.”

And no, this isn’t some cute pet-store contraption. This is an engineering feat: a food-grade plastic container, a 3,000 PSI paintball air cylinder, an oxygen meter, and some lead weights. It’s basically a high-tech bubble for the coolest bird in the Atlantic.

Lawyer put the Bebosphere to the test, letting his feathered co-pilot bob along three feet below the surface. And before you start drafting a strongly worded email—yes, the water was shallow, the conditions were controlled, and yes, Bebe was a “very willing” participant.

Look my idea of “extreme” is successfully assembling an IKEA bookshelf without having leftover screws. Bebe is out here pioneering avian maritime travel. It’s equal parts unhinged and legendary.

It’s that kind of main-character energy that keeps life interesting. While the rest of us are busy worrying about our morning commute or that weird noise the car is making, Bebe is out there testing the limits of physics.
