Apple celebrates 50th Anniversary

Apr 1, 2026, 4:33 PM

Happy 50th birthday, Apple! Can you believe it’s been half a century since two college dropouts named Steve changed the world from a garage in California? Apple started in a garage and is more than a global giant now; it is our life.

Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak started it all in 1976 with the Apple I computer. To grow the company, Jobs famously lured PepsiCo’s John Sculley to be CEO — then the two had a messy falling-out over the Macintosh, and Jobs was pushed out.

But oh, the comeback. Jobs returned in 1997 more focused than ever, delivering the iPod, iPhone and App Store — which didn’t just change phones, it created the app economy we can’t live without. Apple seeped into our culture, from Carrie Bradshaw’s PowerBook on “Sex and the City” to artifacts in the Smithsonian.

Not every product was a hit (anyone remember the Newton?), but today Apple boasts 2.5 billion active devices and a shiny new $599 MacBook Neo. Next up? Conquering AI. We can’t wait to see what’s next.
