Ditch the Grass, Denver — Your City Will Actually Pay You For It

Aug 14, 2026, 6:44 AM

Listen, if you’ve spent even one August afternoon dragging a hose around your yard while muttering about your water bill, this is your sign.

Front Range homeowners are swapping out their thirsty lawns for water-wise native plants — and cities are literally handing out cash and free seed to make it happen.

Here’s what’s going on locally:

Denver Water has given out free native grass seed to more than 700 customers this year — nearly double last year’s numbers. Another 200 people are on the waitlist for lawn removal programs.
Colorado Springs Utilities hit a record this year with 100-plus residents converting their landscapes. Good for them, honestly.
Aurora also has 100+ grass-replacement projects underway for residents right now.
Why should you care? Colorado’s water situation isn’t getting easier, friends. And keeping a picture-perfect green lawn alive out here is basically the outdoor equivalent of running the dishwasher while it’s half empty — we all know better.

Native plants look beautiful, require way less maintenance, and your wallet will absolutely thank you come summer.

Check with your local water utility to see what rebates and free programs are available in your area. Your lawn era might just be over — and that’s actually great news.
