New Years Eve/Day top the list for car thefts

Dec 30, 2025, 6:32 PM

Lock your doors. Don’t let your guard down just because you are celebrating. Thieves target unlocked vehicles, cars left running to warm up, and homes during parties.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau says New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are the most popular days for stolen cars.

20% of all holiday auto thefts each year occur on December 31st.

The New Year’s Eve holiday thefts are fueled by unlocked cars, keys left inside, and festive disruptions.

Other crimes spiking include DUI, public intoxication, property damage, assaults, and burglaries as people party, creating opportunities for thieves.

The Bureau tells the Orlando Sentinel, “People get drunk on New Year’s and that makes many otherwise ordinary, responsible adults act like mindless morons and do things they might not do when sober.”

Good news is that thieves have a heart and Christmas Day has the lowest theft rates for a holiday.

Whereas most vehicles are stolen over the holidays, the rate of car thefts overall has gone down. Read more here
