Express Inc., a company that owns clothing stores in malls across the country, has announced that it will be closing 95 Express stores and all of its UpWest locations as part of a voluntary bankruptcy filing.
In Colorado, three out of the nine Express stores will be closing, and they will be starting clearance sales on Tuesday. The specific locations are at the Denver Pavilions, Flatiron Crossing in Broomfield and the Shops at Centerra in Loveland.
However, three retail stores at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center, Aurora Mall and Park Meadows will remain open, along with three factory outlet locations at the Colorado Mills in Lakewood, Denver Premium Outlets in Thornton and Outlets at Castle Rock.
Express, which is based in Columbus, Ohio, will also be closing all 10 of its remaining UpWest stores, including the one on Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall.
On the other hand, Express plans to keep its Bonobos stores open, including the ones at Cherry Creek North in Denver and 29th Street in Boulder. The websites for all three brands will continue to operate.
The company has received $35 million in new financing from existing lenders and an additional $49 million in cash from the Internal Revenue Service through the CARES Act. However, the lenders have given Express only 30 days to find a buyer. If they fail to do so, the remaining stores may be liquidated.
