Colorado pet owners surrendering more dogs

This is why you do not give pets as gifts. People have been bold enough to re-gift them to shelters.

Shelters in Aurora and surrounding communities are at or near max capacity. My heart is breaking that people can be so cruel.

Shelters are currently evaluating space on a case-by-case basis, but most surrendered dogs are being waitlisted.

Some people rehome gifted pets received during the holiday season and some of them just take them to shelters.

Having space for stray dogs is about public safety. Surrendered pets don’t get priority.

When the Aurora Animal Shelter was built in 1983, it served a population of about 174,000 people. Today, that facility serves a city of around 400,000, and with more people came more animals.

New owners are often surprised at the cost of owning a pet.

There’s a fee to get your lost dog out of the pound. There are vaccination fees. There fees if your dog causes damage. There are fees.

Pets are a blessing in our lives…so I would just like to remind everyone that Denver has an amazing low cost vaccination spay/neuter clinic. Spay2day and you can find them at spay.today.

I take all my dogs there. Let’s work together to control pet overpopulation.

If you are an animal lover like I am, you can always donate your time and/or money to wonderful pet rescues and shelters in Colorado.
