Denver Zoo’s Lion Mom Is Flying the Nest — And We Have Feelings
If you’ve ever dropped your kid off at middle school and immediately ugly-cried in the parking lot, you’ll relate to what’s happening at the Denver Zoo this fall.
Araali, the Zoo’s 6-year-old African lion, is transferring to another AZA-accredited zoo — and yes, she’s leaving her four cubs behind.
The Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance says the move is part of the African Lion Species Survival Plan, which basically acts as a matchmaker and relocation coordinator for lions across accredited zoos. Behavioral changes in both Araali and her yearling cubs signaled they’re ready to do their own thing — independently.
So… mom’s moving on and the kids are staying home. Honestly, same energy as dropping off a teenager and realizing they don’t actually need you anymore. Rude, but also fine.
The good news? Araali’s four cubs will remain at the Denver Zoo, so your family’s next visit still comes with a full pride.
The transfer is expected this fall. No word yet on where Araali is headed, but we’re guessing her new digs will be very nice — she’s earned it.
