Olympians selling medals because they are down on their luck

Feb 3, 2026, 11:37 AM | Updated: 11:37 am

Imagine winning a Gold Medal and then having to sell it to make ends meet. I would be devastated! Even Olympians have struggles.

The Winter Olympics start Friday. There are so many hopefuls heading to compete with others are struggling.

Olympic gold medalists sometimes sell their medals, often via high-end auctions, to navigate financial hardships, fund life changes, or support charities. Some Olympians have lost their medals to bankruptcy even.
While the raw metal value of a gold medal is relatively low (roughly $660-$1,000), auction prices can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars, such as Wladimir Klitschko’s $1 million sale for charity or Greg Louganis selling three medals for over $430,000.
Key Instances of Medal Sales:
  • Greg Louganis: The diving legend sold two golds (1984, 1988) and one silver (1976) in 2025 for $437,000 to fund a move to Panama and to assist with financial independence.
  • Ryan Lochte: Sold three of his Olympic gold medals (2004, 2008, 2016) in 2025-2026 for approximately $385,000 to $400,000.
  • Wladimir Klitschko: Auctioned his 1996 gold medal for $1 million in 2012 to support the Klitschko Brothers Foundation for children, though the buyer returned the medal to him.
  • Mark Pavelich: Sold his 1980 “Miracle on Ice” gold medal for $262,900 in 2014 to secure his daughter’s financial future.
  • Anthony Ervin: Sold his 2000 gold medal on eBay for $17,101 to raise funds for tsunami victims.
  • Jesse Owens: A 1936 gold medal of his sold for a record $1.46 million in 2013.
Why Medals are Sold:
  • Financial Distress: Athletes may face debt, divorce, or limited income post-retirement, leading to the sale of assets.
  • Charity: Some athletes sell their medals to raise funds for charitable causes.
  • High Market Demand: Collectors, not pawn shops, drive the price, as the value lies in history and rarity rather than the \textasciitilde6 grams of gold plating.
Value Breakdown:
  • Melt Value: Roughly $663.07 (as of Feb 2026), based on 92.5% silver, 6.15% copper, and only 1.35% gold.
  • Auction Value: Generally between $20,000 and $50,000, or much higher for historic, famous, or notable athletes.
