Denver Broncos unveil new uniforms for first time since 1997

Apr 22, 2024, 4:55 PM

The Denver Broncos revealed a revamped look for the sixth time in franchise history on Monday, with many fans hoping the change in attire will coincide with a change in performance.

This is the first time in 27 years the uniforms have changed majorly. The new wardrobe is dubbed “The Mile High Collection” and was made public through the Broncos’ social media and website. The look has been in the works for over a year, with the revamp starting in January 2023. The result? Two helmets, three jerseys, three sets of pants and three styles of socks, coming together to make nine primary uniform combinations.

The color palette is the same they’ve used since 1997, a cue they took from the results of the survey filled out by 10,000 fans, which noted that most wanted the colors to remain the same. According to the Broncos’ website, the design was inspired by “Denver’s proud tradition, Colorado’s landscape and Broncos Country.” The majority of those surveyed also voted in favor of new uniforms, and, according to Broncos president Damani Leech, nearly all of the players themselves wanted a change in garb.

There are three separate iterations in “The Mile High Collection”: Sunset Orange (home), Midnight Navy (alternate) and Summit White (away).

The jerseys feature a sleeve cap with jagged line work, designed to conjure up Colorado’s rugged terrain and mountains. A semicircle above represents the sun rising and setting behind the mountains.

The players’ numbers have small triangle perforations, which are more concentrated lower in the number, intending to symbolize the thinner air at high elevations. Larger versions of the triangle perforations appear under the sleeve are not only said to represent “the Colorado summit markers [and] outdoor performance gear aesthetics,” but also come in a trio to symbolize the three Super Bowls won by the team in 1997, 1998 and 2016.

The inner neckline of the jersey reads Denver’s elevation, “5280,” along with “Broncos Country.” On the back of the outside of the neckline appears a triangle with a plus sign inside, designed to resemble summit markers.

With a classic block-style font, the numbers on the front and back of the jerseys are slightly different from past editions. The font used for the players’ names is simplified on the back of the jerseys, with rounded interior corners. “Broncos” is still embroidered across the front of the players’ chests above the player number.

A stripe, which has “5280” written vertically, goes down the outside of each pant leg, met by a “jagged mountain” visual, supposed to represent summiting a mountain.

The helmets come in both navy blue and white, both adorned with the horse head logo. Comprised of small triangles representing mountain peaks on topographic maps or summit markers, an arrow creates a stripe from the back of the neck to the crown of the head. Appearing again is “5280,” this time on the front bumper of the helmets in orange, with “Broncos” on the back bumper. Both helmets will have a metallic satin finish.

To complement the “The Mile High Collection” is the throwback uniform, a callback to the team’s 1977 uniforms and orange and blue colors. Denver can wear the throwback uniforms up to three times a season, but will likely only wear them twice if they wear their alternative jerseys once.

The announcement will be accompanied by a launch party at the team store at Empower Field at Mile High from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday.
