West nile virus found in Denver mosquitos

There is a common misnomer that since Colorado is so dry, that we don’t have mosquitos.  For those living in Colorado they know that isn’t true.  The Centennial State may not have the mosquito problem of more humid states, but the pesky creatures still take up residence in Colorado.

One of the biggest concerns is always West Nile virus and mosquitos that carry it.  The Denver Department of Public Health and Environment has reported a positive result West Nile virus result on Friday.  This is the  first mosquito case in Denver this year, but so far no human cases have been reported in the city.

Colorado has already seen confirmed cases of West Nile virus in mosquitos and humans in Weld and Arapahoe counties this year.

West Nile symptoms can appear 3 to 14 days after being bitten and include;  fever, extreme fatigue, headache, body aches, skin rashes and swollen lymph nodes. 

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC): 

West Nile virus can result in febrile illness or neurologic disease, including meningitis or encephalitis.

If you think you or a family member might have West Nile virus disease (West Nile), talk with your health care provider.

There is no specific treatment for West Nile.

Rest, fluids, and pain medications may relieve symptoms.
