The ‘4-20 Rule’ Will Save You (And Your Car) This Summer

Jul 8, 2026, 9:05 AM

Because sliding into a 200-degree seat is nobody’s idea of a good time.

Denver, we need to talk about this heat.

North America is bracing for yet another round of record-breaking temperatures, and if you’ve attempted to buckle a seatbelt lately, you already know the struggle is very, very real.

But car experts are sharing a simple trick called the “4-20 Rule” — and honestly, it’s the life hack we didn’t know we needed.

Here’s how it works:

  • Open all four windows before you start driving
  • Drive for 20 seconds to push that trapped hot air OUT
  • Close the windows and THEN turn on the air conditioning

That’s it. Seriously.

The method helps flush the scorching air out of your car faster, and — bonus — it actually saves fuel because your AC doesn’t have to work as hard fighting 150-degree trapped air from the start.

Think of it like airing out your kitchen after burning dinner. Not that any of us have ever done that. Twice this week.

So before you peel yourself off that leather seat and question every life choice that led you to a black interior vehicle, try the 4-20 Rule first.

Your kids, your commute, and your fuel bill will thank you. 🌡️

Stay cool, Denver. You’ve got this.
