Meta settlement results in major changes across Instagram and Facebook designed to protect kids

The Meta settlement. If you’re a parent, this one matters. Screen limits, stop notifications, use night modes and more.

Last week, Meta agreed to pay up to $17 billion and make sweeping changes to Instagram and Facebook to protect kids. And while they didn’t admit wrongdoing — years of internal data and lawsuits from 51 states tell a different story.

Here’s what’s coming: real guardrails. A two-hour daily screen limit for teens. No notifications during school hours. A “night mode” that blocks usage from midnight to 6 a.m. unless a parent says otherwise. As a parent, I’ve been waiting for this.

Now, an important thing to know — that $17 billion doesn’t go directly to families or individual kids. It goes to the states, distributed in annual installments over 10 years. Each state decides how to use it. Some are earmarking funds for children’s mental health programs.

Others may put it into their general fund. Whether it actually reaches the kids who were affected is going to be worth watching.

But what I love most is the message it sends. This settlement is Meta saying to parents, “You are our partner. We need you in this equation.” And it might just be the beginning — if TikTok, Snapchat and YouTube adopt similar safeguards, the pressure on the entire industry only grows.

Is this the start of real accountability for Big Tech? I hope so. Parents and tech can work together.
