Look before you lock your car this summer

Jun 15, 2026, 4:38 PM | Updated: 4:38 pm

Summer is here and it’s already heating up across Colorado. Look before you lock.

So let’s talk about something that could save a life.

On an 80-degree day, the inside of your car can hit 109 degrees in just 20 minutes.

And here’s what every parent needs to know — a child’s body heats up three to five times faster than yours. They do not have the ability to cool down their bodies as easy as adults.

Rolling the windows down doesn’t fix it.

Parking in the shade doesn’t fix it.

A few simple habits can prevent a tragedy:

  • Always check your back seat before you lock the door. Make it automatic. Every single time.
  • Put something you need in the back seat — your phone, your purse, your left shoe. Whatever forces you to open that back door.
  • The stuffed animal trick works. When your child is buckled in back, move their stuffed animal to the front seat as a visual reminder.

It takes ten minutes. That’s it.
