Study reveals 4,000 steps per day has major health benefits

Good news! A new study, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, reveals that walking just 4,000 steps a day is beneficial.

It used to be 10,000 steps, so this is something to celebrate.

This modest amount, about 1.5 to 2 miles, lowers mortality risk substantially compared to being sedentary and is more achievable than the common 10,000-step goal, making it an excellent target for improving overall health and longevity.

Walking the steps can improve longevity and reduces heart disease. Mortality risk starts to decrease significantly at approximately 4,000 steps per day. Researchers found that mortality rates drop significantly at just 2,300 steps a day and continue to decrease as a person’s step count rises.

Individuals over 60 benefit most from walking between 6,000 and 10,000 steps a day, while those under 60 see advantages between 7,000 and 13,000 steps a day.

The meta-analysis of 17 studies, totaling over 226,000 participants, showed that more steps provide greater benefits.

The findings highlight that even small amounts of daily, consistent movement can significantly impact health, making it an accessible goal for improving longevity.
