The Denver Mint is one of only four working U.S. Mints currently in the country. The four active coin-producing U.S. Mint locations are: the San Francisco Mint, the Philadelphia Mint, the West Point Mint in New York and the Denver Mint.
Did you know that today the Denver Minto makes 40 million coins a day?! That’s a lot of money!
If you’re wondering if your coins were made here in Denver, there is a way to check. It’s actually quite simple. Look at the front of the coin and near the date is a letter. “D” stands for Denver Mint and means it was made right here in the Mile High City. Similarly, coins made in San Francisco are minted with an “S,” and coins made at the West Point Mint in NY are minted with a “W” .
IF the coin was made before 1968 you probably won’t see the letter on the front of the coin, so check on the back.
Also, the Denver Mint does offer tours. Might be something fun to do with the family on a hot summer day.
Have you ever been to the Denver Mint?
