Does eating your own boogers help you in Colorado?

Mar 27, 2026, 9:09 AM

Listen, we’ve all seen a toddler do it at the grocery store, and we’ve all pretended not to notice. But lately, there’s been a weird amount of chatter on the internet about whether eating your own boogers is actually a “hidden health hack” for your immune system.

As someone who spends way too much time in this KOSI 101.1 studio, I’m here to save you from your own curiosity. Spoiler alert: Please stop.

It’s a popular theory that ingesting nasal mucus acts like a natural vaccine, training your immune system by introducing it to trapped germs. While it sounds like a convenient way to stay healthy during a Colorado flu season, the medical community isn’t exactly handing out gold stars for it.

“There is no credible scientific evidence that eating your boogers provides any immunological benefit,” says Dr. Elena Rodriguez, a local infectious disease specialist. “In fact, you’re just reintroducing bacteria and potential viruses back into your system that your body worked hard to filter out in the first place.”

Not to mention, it’s a one-way ticket to a social disaster. No one wants to see that, Denver.

Think about what your nose actually does: it’s a biological air filter. It catches dust, pollen, allergens, and the lovely Mile High City smog. When you pick your nose, you’re also introducing foreign bacteria from your fingers—like Staphylococcus—into a delicate mucous membrane that is already prone to tiny micro-tears.

If you really want to boost your immune system, put down the finger and pick up a vitamin C supplement or a warm cup of tea. Save the “snack” for something that doesn’t involve your nasal cavity.

Stay classy, Denver. And maybe invest in some hand sanitizer.
