Colorado Domestic Violence-Related Deaths Rose 24% in 2024

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month—a time to support survivors and remember those whose lives have been lost. Personally, I am a Survivor of Domestic Violence and these statistics scare me. We need to get more awareness and support out there.
Colorado’s 2025 Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board report shows just how urgently that support is needed.
The report identified 72 domestic violence-related deaths across 54 cases in 2024—a 24% increase from the previous year. That increase came even as Colorado’s overall homicide rate fell to its lowest level in five years.
Among those who died were 38 people killed by a current or former intimate partner and eight children, ranging from just three months to seven years old.
Behind every number is a person. A neighbor. A friend. A coworker. A child. And behind each loss are families and communities forever changed.
This October, let’s remember that awareness starts with compassion. If someone tells you they’re experiencing abuse, listen without judgment, believe them and offer support without pressuring them. You don’t have to have all the answers to remind someone they’re not alone.
