Boulder chefs take on culinary challenge to support local shelter

A creative new partnership is bringing some of Boulder’s most talented culinary minds into a high-stakes kitchen, all in the name of community support.
All Roads, a nonprofit shelter serving Boulder’s homeless population, kicked off “Chefs at the Shelter” with guest chef Chris Cunningham, the executive chef of The Sink on the Hill.
The local nonprofit behind the initiative is pairing professional chefs with its homeless shelter kitchen, tasking them with a unique challenge: prepare a nourishing meal for 180 residents using only donated ingredients currently on hand.
Organizers say the program, which launched this month, aims to elevate the quality of shelter dining while showcasing the resourcefulness of the local culinary scene. For the chefs involved, it’s a shift from their usual restaurant menus to a focus on “scrappy” cooking—transforming surplus items into high-quality, comfort-forward meals.
“It’s not just about feeding people; it’s about dignity,” says one participating chef. “Cooking for our neighbors in need reminds us why we started doing this in the first place.”
The shelter plans to rotate a new chef into the kitchen each week. By tapping into local expertise, the program hopes to reduce food waste while providing a consistent, heartwarming experience for those navigating housing instability.
Beyond meals, All Roads helps connect residents with housing, employment and health insurance.
