Colorado’s high country develops avalanche danger due to rain and snow

Oct 22, 2026, 9:05 AM | Updated: 11:00 am

If you are heading into the Colorado mountains, especially toward the San Juans, this is one of those “check before you go” situations.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is warning that avalanche danger is developing as a storm brings rain and snow to the high country. Rain could trigger avalanches Thursday, and up to a foot of snow is possible in the San Juan Mountains by Friday. Rain falling on existing snowpack can weaken layers and make slides more likely. Add new snow on top of that, and backcountry conditions can change fast.

Drivers should be extra cautious on mountain roads, especially near steep slopes, avalanche paths and higher passes. Conditions may include wet roads, slush, snow, reduced visibility and sudden closures. Basically, the mountains are doing that charming Colorado thing where they look beautiful while quietly plotting against your tires.

Before traveling, check road conditions through COtrip.org, monitor the latest avalanche forecast at Colorado.gov/avalanche, and make sure your vehicle is ready for winter driving. If you are headed into the backcountry, carry proper avalanche gear, know how to use it and avoid risky terrain. If you are just driving through, give yourself extra time, slow down and do not assume conditions will stay the same from one mile to the next.

The safest plan is simple: Check the forecast, check the roads and be willing to turn around. The mountains will still be there later.
