Why Does I-25 Northbound Play That Annoying Lane-Dropping Game Near County Line Road?

Jul 28, 2026, 12:10 PM

Dave from Castle Rock, we feel you. We really, really do.

If you’ve ever been cruising along I-25 northbound, feeling great about life, only to suddenly lose a lane near the County Line exit — only to GET it back minutes later — you’re not alone. Dave from Castle Rock called us wanting answers, and honestly, same, Dave. Same.

So here’s the deal, and try to stay with us because it’s a lot.

That frustrating lane drop isn’t CDOT being mean just for fun. The stretch near County Line Road is basically an engineer’s nightmare. We’re talking elevation changes, drainage issues, powerlines, and traffic signal equipment all crammed into one spot that would need to be completely relocated just to squeeze in a continuous fourth lane.

Oh, and bridges. Because of course there are bridge constraints too.

Creating a new right shoulder alone would require a serious redesign and full reconstruction of that section. Think of it like trying to add a walk-in closet to a house that literally has no room — except the house is a major interstate and the closet costs millions of dollars nobody has.

The bottom line? Safety concerns and a serious lack of funding make a permanent fix essentially impossible right now.

So next time you’re stuck in that bottleneck, just take a deep breath, mama. You’ve dealt with worse. You have pre-teens at home.
