Why Did The Wolf Cross I-25?

Jun 25, 2026, 9:52 AM | Updated: 10:52 am

A collared wolf recently made headlines — and apparently made crossing one of Colorado’s busiest interstates look easy — after Colorado Parks and Wildlife confirmed the animal successfully crossed I-25.

CPW says the wolf’s bold road trip “highlights the broad movements made by dispersing wolves,” which are known to travel hundreds — sometimes thousands — of miles just to find a mate.

Honestly? Same energy as driving across town for a good first date.

Wildlife officials say this kind of long-distance travel is completely normal wolf behavior. When young wolves leave their pack, they can cover serious ground in search of a partner and new territory.

So while the rest of us are sitting in I-25 construction traffic, this wolf just… crossed it. No GPS. No complaints. No “are we there yet?” from the backseat.

CPW continues to monitor Colorado’s wolf population as the gray wolf reintroduction program moves forward across the state.

No word yet on whether the wolf used the express lane.
