Pueblo Zoo Faces Big Challenges — and the Community May Hold the Key

May 27, 2026, 11:06 AM

For nearly 100 years, the Pueblo Zoo has been a place where families make memories, kids learn about wildlife, and animals from around the world find a home right here in Southern Colorado.

Now, the zoo is facing one of its toughest challenges yet.

Rising costs, budget cuts, and years of deferred maintenance have put financial pressure on the beloved attraction, raising concerns about its long-term future if additional funding isn’t secured.

The zoo currently cares for more than 300 animals, and employees say the mission has always been bigger than just entertainment. From conservation efforts to educational programs for local schools, the zoo plays a major role in the community.

But behind the scenes, workers say it hasn’t been easy.

Many employees continue doing the job because of their passion for animals and the community, despite low wages and aging facilities that need repairs. Like many organizations, the zoo has also been hit by increasing operational costs in recent years.

And yes — feeding animals is expensive. Turns out lions don’t accept coupons.

City leaders are now considering a proposed sales tax measure that would help provide dedicated funding for the zoo. The money would reportedly go toward:

  • Animal care
  • Facility repairs and maintenance
  • Educational programs
  • Long-term improvements to keep the zoo operating for future generations

Supporters say the zoo is more than just a weekend activity — it’s part of Pueblo’s identity.

For many residents, memories of school field trips, summer visits, and family outings are tied directly to the zoo. Losing it would leave a major hole in the community.

The conversation now shifts to voters and residents, whose support could determine what happens next.

One thing most people seem to agree on:
Nobody wants to explain to the penguins why the budget meeting went badly.

As discussions continue, the future of the Pueblo Zoo may ultimately come down to whether the community is willing to invest in preserving one of the city’s longest-standing attractions.
