Colorado Grandpa Conquers World’s Largest Puzzle After Epic Four-Year Battle

Apr 29, 2026, 6:26 AM

In a world where most of us can’t even finish a Netflix binge without losing interest, one Colorado grandfather has redefined patience — and possibly masochism — by completing the planet’s biggest jigsaw puzzle. Lou Salas, a determined puzzle warrior from our area, finally pieced together a 60,000-piece behemoth after four grueling years. Because why rush perfection when you can turn your living room into a cardboard war zone?

According to the New York Post, Salas kicked off this Herculean task back in 2020, right around the time the rest of us were hoarding toilet paper and learning to bake sourdough. The puzzle, a massive map created by Dowdle Folk Art, sprawled across his dedicated “puzzle room” like an invading army of tiny, frustrating soldiers. We’re talking about 800 to 1,000 hours of squinting, sorting and second-guessing — that’s roughly the equivalent of watching every Marvel movie 40 times over, or, you know, a full-time job for a couple of months.

But Salas didn’t go it alone. His eight-year-old granddaughter pitched in, proving that even the youngest family members can spot a rogue edge piece when the going gets tough. Family bonding at its finest: “Grandpa, is that a mountain or a coffee stain?” One can only imagine the intergenerational debates over whether that blue bit was sky or ocean.

The saga reached its dramatic climax last weekend when Dowdle shipped Salas the final missing piece. Yes, you read that right — the puzzle arrived incomplete, adding an extra layer of irony to the whole endeavor. Was it a manufacturing mishap or a clever ploy to ensure customer loyalty? Either way, Salas can now bask in the glory of his completed masterpiece, which measures an impressive 8 feet by 29 feet. That’s bigger than most New York apartments, folks.

Salas isn’t just any puzzle hobbyist; he’s a retired engineer with a penchant for brain-teasing challenges. In interviews, he’s shared that the project helped him stay sharp during retirement, though we suspect it also served as a foolproof excuse to avoid yard work. “Honey, I can’t mow the lawn — I’ve got 59,999 pieces to go!”

For those inspired (or horrified) by Salas’ feat, Dowdle offers the puzzle for around $400, though you’ll need to clear out a small warehouse to assemble it. And if you’re thinking of taking on something similar, remember: Rome wasn’t built in a day, but apparently, the world’s largest puzzle can be — if you’ve got four years and a saintly amount of patience.

What’s next for Salas? Maybe a puzzle of the universe? Or perhaps he’ll just kick back with a 500-piece kitty cat scene. Either way, hats off to this Colorado legend for reminding us that sometimes, the biggest victories come in the tiniest pieces.
