Would you pay $60 to sit in the dark?

Apr 14, 2026, 8:30 AM

Listen, I love a good night out. As a mom of two little girls, I cherish any excuse to get out of the house, drink an overpriced glass of wine, and not have to negotiate the terms of a bedtime routine. But this latest theater trend out of Los Angeles? It’s a hard pass from me.

According to reports, theatergoers in L.A. are paying $60 to attend a production called Poe: Pulse & Pendulum. The catch? You’re blindfolded for the entire two-act show.

The play, put on by Theatre Obscura LA, blends Edgar Allan Poe’s The Pit and the Pendulum and The Tell-Tale Heart. Paul Millet, the company’s founder, says the goal is to make the audience uncomfortable by removing their sight.

Honestly, Paul? I’m a mother of two. My life is already defined by unease. I’m currently dodging Lego bricks in the dark at 2 a.m. and trying to identify mysterious sticky spots on my kitchen floor without turning on the lights. Trust me, I don’t need to pay $60 to feel heightened anxiety in a dark room. I get that for free before my first cup of coffee.

But hey, if you’re looking for a date night that involves zero eye contact and total sensory confusion, this might just be for you. Me? I think I’ll stick to plays where I can actually see the stage—and, more importantly, see exactly where my exits are.
