50,000 strong: Denver makes HERstory

Nearly 30 years without a women’s pro team, Denver makes history — in Women’s History Month.

It’s fitting that Denver’s longest drought in women’s professional sports ends in March.

Denver Summit FC takes the field for its inaugural home match Saturday at noon at Empower Field at Mile High, bringing top-level women’s professional sports back to the city for the first time in nearly three decades — right in the heart of Women’s History Month.

More than 50,000 tickets have been sold for the National Women’s Soccer League contest against the Washington Spirit, a number that would shatter the league’s single-game attendance record of 40,091.

The timing is no small detail. March is set aside each year to honor the contributions and achievements of women, and Denver’s sellout crowd sends a clear message: the demand for women’s sports isn’t just growing, it has arrived.

The Colorado Xplosion (ABL) was a previous professional women’s basketball team in the late 1990s

Colorado native and U.S. Women’s National Team captain Lindsey Heaps is expected to join the roster in June, adding a hometown connection to an already energized fan base.

The match airs on CBS and Paramount+.

A new chapter in Denver sports begins Saturday — and history chose the perfect month to write it.
