New Pokémon Pokopia game hints at the franchise’s future

Mar 4, 2026, 8:16 PM

The Pokémon Company just scored a massive win — and it’s not even from a mainline game.

Pokémon Pokopia, a brand-new spin-off releasing today (March 5, 2026) exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2, has become the highest-rated Pokémon game of all time according to Metacritic.

The Numbers Don’t Lie.

With an impressive Metacritic score of 89/100 based on over 50 critic reviews, Pokopia has surpassed beloved classics like Pokémon X/Y, Pokémon Black/White, and Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver. It’s also the top-rated game of 2026 so far.

What Kind of Game Is It?

Pokopia isn’t your typical Pokémon battle adventure. Instead, it’s a life simulation and building game — think Animal Crossing meets Minecraft, but with Pokémon.

Players take on the role of a Ditto who transforms into a humanoid character. Your mission? Befriend Pokémon and use their unique abilities to rebuild a desolate island. It’s cozy, creative, and surprisingly deep.

GameSpot awarded it a 9/10, praising the game for giving players “a massive amount to do and a story that propels you forward.” Nintendo Life called it “one of the most enticing Pokémon games ever.”

Pokopia’s success sends a clear message: fans are ready for innovation.

The next mainline game, Pokémon Winds and Waves, won’t arrive until 2027 — so Pokopia is the perfect way to get your Pokémon fix while proving that bold new directions can pay off big.
