Introvert, extrovert or otrovert? Psychiatrist coins new term for personality type

Dec 10, 2025, 8:22 AM | Updated: 3:57 pm

Are you an extrovert, introvert or maybe the newly coined “otrovert”? It simply means “other,” and is not a combination of intro and outro, meaning you don’t necessarily have a combination of traits – that would be an ambivert.

Otroverts – according to the psychiatrist who came up with the phrase – are socially well liked, but prefer small or one-on-one interactions. They may have a hard time handling groups, because they always feel as though they don’t fit in. He theorizes that we all may be otroverts by default at birth, and then we learn to be either introverted or extroverted.

He also says otroverts tend to be “independent thinkers who aren’t emotionally dependent” on what others think. So, they’re often renegades.
