Specialty grocers like Whole Foods, Sprouts have cheapest eggs in Denver

Feb 6, 2025, 2:15 PM

Eggs are historically expensive in Colorado, but the places with the cheapest eggs in town are actually the stores that are normally the priciest.

When you think of specialty grocery stores like Whole Foods and Sprouts, you normally don’t think cheap. However, when it comes to eggs right now, they are the cheapest by quite a bit.

The main reason prices have climbed recently is because of the bird flu outbreak, which started in 2022, but in Colorado, a law that went into effect Jan. 1 requiring all eggs to come from cage-free chickens, has also affected the price.

It’s possible the specialty stores are the cheapest because they were already working with cage-free suppliers, but regardless of the reason, places like King Soopers and Walmart were nearly double the cost.

The Denver Gazette researched a number of options, focusing on a dozen cage-free eggs, white or brown. These prices were posted around 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 3:
