All aboard for history: World’s largest steam engine heads to Colorado.
Union Pacific will bring Big Boy No. 4014 through Colorado from Monday, Oct. 21, to Wednesday, Oct. 23, on its “Heartland of America Tour.”
The autumn tour, which kicked off in August, features the iconic locomotive journeying from its starting point in Cheyenne, Wyoming, across nine states, including Colorado. While the tour will include two brief whistle stops in Colorado, the locomotive won’t be making any extended public appearances.

Whistle stops in Colorado are scheduled in Strasburg and Greeley.
- Monday, Oct. 21, from 3:45 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. at the Monroe St. Crossing in Strasburg
- Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 12:35 p.m. to 1:05 p.m. at the 10th St. Crossing in Greeley
During World War II Union Pacific operated some of the most modern and powerful steam locomotives ever built. Among them were the famous “Big Boys,” the largest steam locomotives in the world.
Working with them were the “800-class” high-speed passenger locomotives, as well as hundreds of older class steam engines.
Union Pacific’s steam legacy continues today with the preservation and operation of its historic fleet – No. 844 and No. 4014.
