Tickets for under $10? This ski area is continuing a new pricing system

Sep 5, 2024, 10:02 AM | Updated: 10:32 am

Skiing in Colorado is a winter staple for some, but lift tickets cost over $100 for one day, with season passes worth hundreds of dollars. However, with the ski season still a few months away, one mountain is selling tickets as cheap as $9!!

Last season, day passes were hundreds of dollars at every large ski area near Denver. Purchasing a day pass in November for a trip in December cost a least $100 and sometimes even over $200, depending where you went.

To cut down on prices, many skiers purchase an Epic of Ikon pass each year, which pays a lump sum of around a thousand dollars and mostly unlimited skiing is select ski areas. While this tends to be the best deal for skiers, some mountains are offering better deals a few months earlier.

Purgatory Resort is taking a different approach. The resort is trying out “demand-based  pricing” starting at $9! for the second year in a row. Demand-based pricing means that when more tickets sell, the prices go up. It is designed to manage the number of skiers and riders on the mountain on specific days to ensure everyone has the best time possible out on the slopes, rather than simply selling out of tickets and turning people away. On holidays and big powders the tickets are higher. This trend often used for airlines and travel businesses is becoming more popular in the ski industry.
