Xcel Energy may shut off power to some customers on Wednesday

High winds are expected, and Xcel is warning us it may cause some issues.

Xcel Energy may shut off power to some customers on Wednesday as the Front Range experiences high fire danger.

Xcel cited dry conditions over the past few weeks, near-record warm temperatures and a forecast for strong winds as the reasons for the potential power shutoffs. The company said in a news release that its priority is protecting customers and communities. Cusomters in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, Larimer and Weld counties could be affected.

The company cited two measures they take amid wildfire risk:

  • Enhanced powerline safety settings allow power lines to remain in service, but the power lines are more sensitive and can instantly shut off if an issue is detected, such as a tree branch or other object touching the line. Power will remain off until an Xcel crew can visually inspect the power line.
  • In a public safety power shutoff, power is proactively shut off for safety.

On a related note, you might want to leave those inflatables un-flated so they don’t blow away!
