Where is the smoke coming from in Colorado and when will it leave?

Winds from the north are carrying smoke into the Denver area. Over the past few days, you may have noticed haze in the skies over Colorado — that’s due to wildfire smoke. The smoke doesn’t originate in Colorado, but rather is being pushed into our area by winds coming out of the north. The wildfires are burning in Canada, California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington.

More than 3 million acres are currently burning in 33 fires in the Pacific Northwest.

Officials with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said smoke high up in the atmosphere, stemming mainly from the Canadian wildfires, is expected across large parts of the state on Mondaycombining with the fires from the Pacific Northwest and will impact Colorado’s air quality.

Until the some leaves the state, it is advised to limit time outdoors and outdoor exercise activities.

According to our partners at 9News, the smoke will be at it’s worst today (Wednesday) before some slight relief on Thursday and then it’ll “basically be gone on Friday.”

By Friday, they say that some Pacific moisture streams in along with a weak system. That’ll kick off fairly widespread mountain showers and storms, with a few possible in the metro area as well that will really help with the smoke. It looks similar for Saturday before drier weather moves back in for Sunday and early next week.
