‘The Passion of the Christ’ sequel takes shape as Mel Gibson scouts Malta.
Mel Gibson is reportedly checking out spots in Malta for the sequel to his 2004 hit, The Passion of the Christ, with production possibly kicking off in 2025. Fans have been eagerly waiting for The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection, which is set to delve into the events surrounding Jesus’ resurrection.
Last week, the Italian news outlet Italpress shared that Gibson was in Malta for a five-day trip to chat with local authorities about this potential film project. They mentioned that he’s on the lookout for filming locations for the sequel, which he had a hand in writing, producing, and directing.
Gibson and his production crew even had a meeting with Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela, according to Italpress. The original film remains the highest-grossing Christian movie ever, dominating the box office for four weekends in 2004 and raking in $370 million in the U.S. It focused on the final hours of Jesus before His crucifixion.
Interestingly, it seems the sequel will be divided into two parts, as noted on IMDB.com, which is regularly updated by the filmmakers and their teams. The site lists both The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection and The Passion of the Christ: Resurrection: Chapter II.
Pre-production, according to IMDB, will begin in April.
